Visiting Malacca: A Unesco World Heritage Site in Malaysia (Part 2)

Updated on February 19, 2013

Nyonya Asam Laksa at Jonker88

Must - Eat in Malacca: Laksa and Cendol

The next morning, we headed out for souvenir shopping at San Shu Gong. The previous day we had tried the samples of the various local snacks and now it was time to buy our selected snacks to bring home for family and friends. After completing our shopping, we decided to satisfy our craving for delicious laksa and cendol. For our first meal of the day, we headed to Jonker 88. The place has an old-school charm as you will see old equipment there like an old typewriter.

We tried two different types of laksa, one which is sour and the other with santan (cocounut milk). They were both great! The cendol is also served with gula melaka (palm sugar) which is unique to Malacca. It is a great choice of drink or dessert on a hot day.

After eating, we then continued exploring the heritage area around Heeren Street (or Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock). The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum is located along this street as well as several boutique hotels which are renovated from traditional townhouses such as Hotel Puri and the Baba House. Here, we had some delicious chocolates at THC Chocolate. Then, we had delicious Nyonya food at the nearby Restoran Peranakan (at 107 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock). We ordered ayam ponteh (chicken), itik itim (duck soup) and ikan tenggiring asam (fish). If you order the Small portion, it will be just right for 2 people.

Relaxing at a Cafe along Jonker Street

After lunch, we continued our shopping at the shops along Jonker Street. In the day, there are no stalls blocking the shops hence it is easier to shop. As it was really hot, we stoped at a nearby cafe, Rainforest Cafe for coffee and tea. The cafe has only a few tables as it is also an antique stall selling traditional Peranakan style furniture.

Taking the Bus from Melaka Sentral

Soon, it was time to head back to Singapore. We took a cab to Melaka Sentral where we browsed the shops there while waiting for the departure time. All in all, it was a fun trip with great food and great company! Do visit Malacca if you have the chance.
