Top Five Things To Do In Singapore

Shopping in Singapore

Itinerary Ideas for First Time Visitors to Singapore

There is so much to see and do in Singapore. For a first time visitor, you may feel lost and unsure where to start. Don't worry. Check out my list of top five things to do in Singapore.

1. Shop, Shop, Shop!

When it comes to shopping, Singapore is most well known for its annual Great Singapore Sale (GSS). Although this happens from May till July, Singapore still offers great shopping during the remaining months. Navigating Orchard Road, the must-shop area in Singapore can be confusing for a newbie. However, fret not as getting lost is part of the adventure! This is a place suitable not only for hard core shoppers but also for those who enjoy people-watching. The area is packed on weekends though so be prepared for the crowds. Besides Orchard Road, there are other places to shop such as the Marina Bay area, Haji Lane near Bugis for one-of-a-kind shops, and Vivocity.

Bak Chor Mee (noodles)

2. Try The Local Food

Singapore is a multicultural country with citizens from different races. Hence, get ready for an interesting culinary journey here. You can try the various Chinese food available here from Hokkien noodles to Shanghainese xiao long bao to dim sum and much more. For Malay food, you can attempt the spicy nasi lemak while for Indian food, your best shot at an authentic meal would be at the Little India precinct.

Chill Out at KPO

3. Party till Night Falls or Dawn Breaks!

Clarke Quay is the place to go for variety. There are restaurants, malls, cafes, clubs to spend your night away. Singapore also has a few rooftop bars. Most notable is Ku De Ta at the top of Marina Bay Sands and Loof. If you are already at Orchard Road, you can just head to KPO, which stands for Killiney Post Office.

Spend A Day at Sentosa Island

4. Have Fun Like A Kid

For the young at heart, head to Sentosa island where you will find Singapore's largest theme park, Universal Studios Singapore (USS), which is also the first in SouthEast Asia. Besides this, you can visit the brand new Marine Life Park which is also the the world’s largest oceanarium. After a fun but tiring day, you can then head to Resorts World Sentosa for a delicious meal and for some shopping. A cheaper option compared to USS would be to visit one of Singapore's parks. One of the most popular ones among locals is the East Coast Park where family and friends gather for picnic, barbecues, to cycle, roller blade and so forth.

The Iconic Merlion at the Marina Bay Waterfront

5. Take a Picture With The Merlion, Singapore's Mascot

The Merlion is Singapore's icon and is a must visit for all tourists to the country. The largest one is on Sentosa Island and due to its height and location you can also get a great view from the observation deck.

There is another popular one along the Marina Bay waterfront. It is located in the Merlion Park, opposite the Fullerton Hotel so you can take pictures of this heritage hotel and then head over for a photo with the Merlion. After that, you can head to Marina Bay Sands or the Esplanade for a performance before calling it a day!
