Day 7 in Melbourne, Australia: Exploring the Queen Victoria Market and ACMI

Breakfast At Queen Victoria Market

On our last day in Melbourne, we headed to one of the city's most famous and iconic tourist attractions, the Queen Victoria Market. At this huge market, there are many sections which are divided by the various product types such as meat, bakeries, fruit & vegetables, clothes & handicraft. On weekends, there is also a wine market. If you are feeling hungry, you can choose to eat at the "foodcourt" there.

You can also purchase jam doughnuts or Spanish donuts from the vans parked within the market. The jam doughnuts have been sold there for ages and are sold in a pack of 6. There are usually long queues but as the workers work fast, you won't have to wait long.

ACMI: An Interesting Museum

After lunch, we then walked towards the Federation Square where the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (better known as ACMI) is located. This is the coolest museum I have ever been to! I visited two different exhibition halls.

One was filled with interactive video games and visitors are allowed to try them on the spot. Another hall was filled with artefacts from the start of the movie industry to the present. You can view movies without sound, view the original storyboards and even come upclose and personal to a real Oscar (but you cannot touch it though...). Cate Blanchett, who comes from Melbourne, contributed the Oscar she won to the museum.

All in all, the whole museum is a fun place for the whole family. The interactive display I loved best was the one which allowed visitors to record their own Matrix-like short clip and email it to themselves. Go try it out! You will get an idea of how filming was done for the Matrix!

Federation Square is Always Bustling With Activity!

While leaving ACMI, we also stopped by Federation Square to view a free jazz performance held in conjunction with the start of the winter season in Australia on 1 June. Besides that, they are also comedic performances. But do note, that you should come with an open mind as some of the topics in the performances may be sensitive.

From Federation Square, it is just a short walk back to the Formule 1 Hotel where we collected our luggage from the lockers. We then waited for the Skybus shuttle to bring us to the Southern Cross Station. As it was still early, we then decided to do some last minute shopping at the Spencer Street Fashion Station (just right above where the Skybus stops) which is actually located in the same area. Unfortunately, it proved to be disappointing as many shop lots were empty, and some of the others were also having their clearance sales. In the end, I did not buy anything. And we then took the Skybus towards the Melbourne Airport and with that our one week holiday in Melbourne ended. My one week in Melbourne was truly awesome and I will definitely re-visit the city someday!
