Attractions in Singapore

Updated on March 3, 2013

The Little Red Dot

Singapore is affectionately known as the little red dot. Despite its small size, Singapore has many attractions to offer to different groups of tourists.

First off, Singapore is a great place to shop. Prices vary depending on the shopping areas. Those with more cash, can head to Orchard Road where you will find the high-end brands like Gucci and Prada. However, in the Orchard Area, it is possible to find some bargains particularly at Far East Plaza. Other places to shop include Bugis, Suntec and at Chinatown.

Culture: the Three Main Races

In Singapore, there are three main group of races, namely Chinese, Malay and Indian. To learn more about the Chinese culture head to Chinatown. For a lesson in the Malay culture head to the Kampung Glam or Geylang Serai area whereas Little India is the place to discover the Indian culture. The various Chinese, Malay and Indian restaurants can be found all over the island.

Arts, Music and Drama: The Esplanade

The Esplanade is a durian-like building where many arts, music and drama performances are performed. Throughout the week, there are various shows. At times, there are free performances too. So for a cheap night out, do consider heading here. After a great performance, walk along the waterfront area and enjoy the night view.

Go where the Locals Go

Travelling around Singapore on public transport is pretty easy and affordable. Buses and the MRTs combined will bring you to almost every attraction. So, if you wish to go where the locals are just get onto the train. People watching on the train is also interesting.

At the eastern end of Singapore, is Pulau Ubin. If you love nature and would love to see how Singapore was many, many years ago, then Pulau Ubin is the place for you.

At the western side of Singapore is where the Jurong Bird Park is. Drop by the Science Centre too which will make it a fun yet educational trip particularly if you are travelling as a family.

Sentosa Island

Welcome to Sentosa, a great place for the whole family.

Sentosa: Casino, Theme Park and Water Sports

Sentosa is a must visit for visitors to Singapore. The place is always crowded with people. The latest attraction there is definitely Resorts World Sentosa which includes the Universal Studios theme park and the first casino in Singapore. Another relatively new attraction is the Wavehouse where wannabe surfers can attempt to conquer the artificial waves at the Wavehouse. Older attractions include the Underwater World and the Dolphin Lagoon.

Durians: The King of Fruits

Geylang: Singapore's Red-Light District

Singapore is well known for being a safe place to stay. Known also for its strict rules and cleanliness. Hence, tourists are always amazed to know that there is a red-light district at Geylang. In Geylang, good food is also to be found. During the durian season, this is also the place to go to for the best variety of durians. Fruit stalls are set up along the roads and you can choose to open the durians there and then and feast by the road side or bring it home for later.

Singapore is More than just a Place to Transit

Despite the many attractions listed above, there are still many left unexplored. Singapore has many parks such as the Botanical Gardens, the East Coast Park and Pasir Ris Park. This places are off the beaten path and usually left of a tourist's itinerary due to the lack of time. For those who have more time, it is worthwhile to explore Singapore's suburban areas where you can see how the locals live. Singapore is a great place to visit and is among the top 5 cities which I love.
